AstralDemons — Allods Online 3.0

What this project is

AstralDemons runs Allods Online on version 3.0, Game of Gods — the build that went live at the end of 2011 and, for a lot of players, was the last one where the game still hung together as one thing. Nothing from the later updates is here. That is a decision, not a gap in the work.

What Game of Gods was

Update 3.0.0 was officially titled “Episode II: Game of Gods”, and the title is literal. The Great Mages can see that the gods are about to settle things between them; ordinary mortal strength will not survive that, so Yasker and Aidenus — the two mages standing behind the Empire and the League — point their heroes toward Ascension.

In practice it came down to concrete things: the cap moved up to 51, the walls between levels came down, and a second ladder opened above it — the rank of Great, Emblems of Greatness, a second specialisation. Plus a new class, the Bard, who fights with music instead of a weapon and holds a whole group together. The rest of what changed is on the about the game page.

Why this version in particular

Allods 3.0 rests on the Astral. The world is broken into floating islands, and everything you level for ends up beyond the edge of inhabited land sooner or later: your ship, the layers, the astral bosses and what drops off them. It is a rare case where the good part is not one dungeon with a boss at the end of it, but a whole environment you have to sail into as a crew on your own ship. You join a guild here not because that is what people do, but because there is no other way in.

The second reason: you can reach the interesting part without turning the game into a second job. The cap is close, the road to it is straight, and what comes after it is the thing everything was built for.

Where to go next

If you have played before, a couple of evenings is enough to remember the way to the Astral. If you have not, start with the race — it decides your faction, and with it the classes you can play. The classes page walks through that and carries the full race-by-archetype table.
